In 1965, in Linwood, California, Dale Allenbaugh was hard at work developing and patenting the first-ever Scaffold Plank Rodding Machine. That innovation laid the groundwork for something bigger.
By 1976, Dale and his family—starting on a mere dirt floor—were working tirelessly around the clock to build both their products and their business. That’s when A-1 was officially born.

Over 40 years later, A-1 is still family-owned and operated, now proudly headquartered in Hays, Kansas—right in the heart of America. We relocated here to better serve the entire country with faster lead times, central shipping access, and room to grow. Today, we’ve grown from a small family operation to a national-level scaffolding and steel fabrication company with domestic and global ties.
